listening notes 001: stood still

stood still - Dowsing Rod

stood still feels like finding a cool sweater at a thrift store. Worn-in, familiar, a little fuzzy around the edges, but still somehow new to you.

Released on May 22, 2026, stood still is the second EP from Massachusetts-based band Dowsing Rod. The project was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Campbell Fackre.

As a new listener, it feels like a solid introduction to Dowsing Rod — fuzzy, heavy, warm, and carefully built. The EP feels handmade without feeling careless. It carries a nostalgic weight to it, like Massachusetts backroads, summer nights, and a feeling you somehow miss even though you never lived inside it.

chiral

The opener immediately hits nostalgic notes of Massachusetts backroads and indie rock. The fuzzy, overdriven guitar riffs are upbeat yet deeply reflective, striking that perfect balance.

It feels like an introduction to the dreamy haze of a past summer that I’ll never experience but will always miss.

digit end

“digit end” feels a bit more punchy and upbeat, driven by energetic, slightly cutting guitar riffs.

This track feels like summer nights at the skatepark — restless, warm, and building toward some kind of cathartic release. The guitar is what really pulled me in here. The song feels sun-faded and overdriven, like a melody pushing through a wall of fuzz.

By the end of the song, it starts building toward something heavier. As the door shuts, we’re entering a different room.

floating through the room

This is the heaviest song on the EP — a wall of sound that holds you and won’t let go.

The guitar riffs feel familiar to the beginning of the EP, but here they’re pulled through heavier drums and a more brutal atmosphere. It brings more energy, more weight, and this feeling of being thrown around by the sound.

“digit end” was originally my favorite, but the breakdown and ending of “floating through the room” stand out so much. It’s sweet in a surprising way, bringing you down after throwing you all over the place into this gentle buzz that carries us beautifully into the next track.

windmill

As a closer, “windmill” feels like a great transition out of “floating through the room.” It keeps the energy upbeat yet strange and reflective.

It hits that sweet spot of being melodic yet harsh. Worn-in, but carefully curated.

final note

What works about stood still is the balance. It feels DIY at the edges, but intentional at the center. The guitars are fuzzy and familiar, the production feels cared for, and the whole project carries nostalgia without getting stuck there.

It feels like an awesome little gift from someone who knows exactly what kind of noise you like.

Thank you for reading. Available for listening on Bandcamp and Spotify.
